Valentina Nisi (ITI/LARSyS and research team member of the BIG ERA Chair project) and Nuno Nunes (ITI/LARSyS and Co-PI of the BIG ERA Chair project), have authored an article entitled “Empowering Small-Scale Agriculture through Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technology: Review and Future Perspectives” in the book Blockchain for Good: The Transformative Impacts on Industry, Community, and the Planet.
Edited by Shoufeng Cao and Marcus Foth (Queensland University, Australia), Blockchain for Good explores how blockchain, originally designed for cryptocurrencies, has evolved into a powerful tool for driving sustainable innovation across industries, communities, and environmental initiatives. The book is structured into three sections—Industry, Community, and Planet—each examining blockchain’s potential to foster ethical business practices, fairer social systems, and environmental responsibility.
Nisi and Nunes’s chapter, which includes collaboration from Sabrina Scuri of Politecnico di Milano, one of the project’s partner network members, explores how blockchain and distributed ledger technology can empower smallholder farmers by increasing transparency and efficiency in agricultural supply chains. Their research aligns with the book’s broader goal of demonstrating how emerging technologies can contribute to a more equitable and sustainable future.
