OBJECTIVES | FUNCTIONS
Development of techniques to analyze the economical security of Ethereum smart contracts with a focus on price manipulation resistance by leveraging and combining traditional static program analysis techniques such as symbolic execution and taint analysis.
A successful candidate is expected to create a tool that can detect locations within a smart contract which might be vulnerable to price manipulation attacks and perform an evaluation on existing deployed smart contracts to evaluate the precision and recall of the proposed solution as well as the prevalence of such vulnerable smart contracts in the wild.

This criterion will be evaluated via the CV and academic transcripts or other training certificates.
- Criterion B: Prior research experience in topics related to the work plan (45%), namely participation in projects in the areas of decentralized platforms, blockchains, security and privacy, and large-scale distributed systems. This criterion will be evaluated via the CV.
- Criterion C: Statement of Purpose (10%), which should describe the candidate’s skills and background and their relevance for the work plan. This criterion will be evaluated via the statement of purpose.
The final grade will be obtained through the following formula:
Final score = (0,45 x A) +(0,45 x B) + (0,1 x C)
The evaluation panel assigns a classification to each of the candidates on a scale of 0 to 100 points, ranking the candidates according to their classification consisting on the sum of the partial classifications assigned in each evaluation criterion, and considering the weighting factor given to each parameter. In this process abstentions are not allowed.
In the event of a tie among candidates with the same highest evaluation score, the Evaluation Panel reserves the right to conduct interviews to have a more objective assessment of specific criteria.
If an interview is conducted, the punctuation proposed by each member of the evaluation panel is obtained by assigning a weighting factor of 80% to the CV, and a weighting factor of 20% to the interview.
Additionally, the evaluation panel retains the discretion to withhold the scholarship if the candidates fail to fulfil the stipulated requirements.
The evaluation panel may also decide not to assign the scholarship, if none of candidates meets the required conditions.
If the requirements mentioned above are not fulfilled, the evaluation panel may choose not to select a candidate.

5 | OBJECTIVES/WORKPLAN
The Executive Board of INESC-ID – Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores, Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Lisboa, approved a call for one scholarship for a Ph.D. student in the scope of project ERA Chair Project – BIG: “Enhancing the research and innovation potential of Tecnico through Blockchain technologies and design Innovation for social Good”, Grant Agreement nº 952226, funded by the European Union. This project envisions building a digital living lab infrastructure (BIGLab), which will serve as a shared cross-domain platform that will foster interdisciplinary approaches and the exploitation of synergies among research members and collaborators in areas related to blockchain.
The Ph.D. student scholarship position will contribute to fulfilling the project´s goals by:
- Providing a funding opportunity to Ph.D. students who are developing research in Blockchain related areas,
- Providing support to the project´s research team;
- Conducting research in the areas of blockchain security and robustness, namely by devising systematic ways to understand, compare, and improve the performance of large-scale blockchains in general, and blockchain consensus protocols in particular, in scenarios that require security guarantees against deliberate adversarial behavior from a subset of the participants.
6 | SCIENTIFIC SUPERVISION
The activity will be supervised by Rodrigo Seromenho Miragaia Rodrigues, Full Professor and Researcher at INESC-ID.
INESC ID will integrate the grantee in the research team of the scientific advisor.

Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon is seeking highly qualified candidates for two faculty positions to join the BIG ERAChair project funded by the European Research Area. Background
The BIG ERA Chair (bigerachair.tecnico.ulisboa.pt) is funded by the European Research Area through an ERAChair grant, a prestigious grant awarded to select research institutions in Europe. Through the BIG ERA Chair grant, Tecnico is launching a new world-class lab — the BIG Lab. Working across Tecnico in close collaboration with others across both the university and our external partners, BIG Lab’s core aim is to deliver on the promise of decentralisation -— in particular blockchain and associated technologies -— in the delivery of sustainability and social good outcomes. BIG is developing an exciting interdisciplinary environment and creating a critical mass of researchers to investigate the technological underpinnings and role of decentralised and blockchain technologies.
Research Faculty Profile
We are seeking strong candidates in any of the following areas of expertise:
- Software Engineering, Programming Languages and Environments. We are particularly interested in candidates with a background in design and implementation of programming systems and software verification tecniques and tools for developing trustworthy decentralised applications.
- Distributed Computing and Systems Security. We are particularly interested in candidates who have background in the building blocks of Blockchains, including but not limited to distributed consensus, decentralized distributed systems, and systems security.

The Laboratory Technician position will be instrumental to fulfill the BIGLab goals by accomplishing the following tasks:
- To maintain the BIGLab, ensuring the technical infrastructure is available to all researchers involved in the project;
- Support the research team and the Master’s and Ph.D. students in deploying blockchain and DLT-based systems and infrastructures that could lead to real-world deployments;
- Liaison with industry affiliates to ensure interoperability and complementarity of research infrastructures.
